Microgreen Grow Kit Instructions

On The Grow Microgreen Grow Kits

Are you looking for the perfect gift to give someone you know, while also sharing your love for microgreens?? … or maybe you’ve never grown Microgreens before and want to first give growing them a test at home before committing to all the Microgreen supplies….

Well, then a On The Grow® Microgreen Grow Kit is exactly what you need, and we have two options available for purchase here on our website!! So first, lets dive into what comes in both kits, then we can go over the instructions more in depth!

Whenever you order either kit, you will receive a basic set of instructions on how to use them. However, we understand here at On The Grow® that sometimes, we need to visually see certain steps and how they should look – or just get a little bit more information to make the right all! Below, we have taken the instructions, which are basically the same for both kits, and have done or best to break them down just a little bit more for you!

Kit #1

Reusable Microgreen Grow Kit:

Items Included in kit-

  • (1) White Reusable Container

  • (1) Reusable Lid

  • (2) Organic Seed Packets

  • (2) Organic Coco Discs

  • (2) Organic Worm Casting - Nutrient Packets

  • (1) Spray bottle

  • (1) Basic Instructions

This kit is our “premium” grow kit, as the container and lid are both reusable, and if you run out of seed, worm castings, or grow medium – you can always buy more and container to use it time and time again. This kit includes seeds, grow medium and worm castings that are all Organic, OMRI certified and GMO free. Along with the Container and Spray bottle being made from FDA approved materials, and a lid custom designed lid we created with our leaf logo on it.

The lid in this kit not only helps to trap in the moisture for the seedlings, but the added weight feature improves the germination, and has the benefit of being used as the quick “tamping” device!

Currently, we only offer two seed varieties with this kit, and they are – Broccoli Microgreens and Purple Kohlrabi Microgreens!

Kit #2

Paper Microgreen Grow Kit:

Items Included in kit-

  • (2) Paper Containers

  • (2) Paper Lids

  • (2) Organic Seed Packets

  • (2) Organic Coco Discs

  • (2) Organic Worm Castings - Nutrient Packets

  •  (1) Spray bottle

  •  (1) Basic Instructions

This kit is more of a “premium” paper grow kit, as the container and lid are both made from EcoChoice paper that is coated with a PLA lining created from plant-based starches. Because of the PLA lining it insures that the container will not become “soggy” from the moisture of watering your microgreens, like other “paper” kits, and this kit is compostable. The lid on this kit is also vented, that way when you close it during germination – it will not suffocate your microgreens, nor will there be a “smell” created. This kit includes packets of seeds, grow medium and worm castings that are all Organic, OMRI certified and GMO free. Along with the Containers, lids and Spray bottle being made from FDA approved materials. Technically, you can reuse the pots up to 3+ times if you take care of them properly.

Currently, we only offer two seed varieties with this kit, and they are – Broccoli Microgreens and Purple Kohlrabi Microgreens!

Microgreen Grow Kit Instructions

Adding water for Microgreen Grow Kit.JPG

Step 1:

In the grow container, combine (3) ounces of tap water with (1) of the coco discs. When doing this step, we highly suggest not adding any more then (3) ounces of water per coco disc, otherwise it becomes too moist – Tip, use the spray bottle to measure out (3) ounces by filling it 1 and ½ times. You can also lightly push the coco disc down with your finger until the top is saturated some, this will ensure that the entire disc soaks up the water – rather than just the bottom half.  You’ll then wait about 5 minutes for disc to start sucking up all the water and expand.

Step 2:

Once the coco disc has expanded, use your hands to break apart the coco disc in the container. Then sprinkle in (1) packet of the nutrients (aka worm castings!) and mix until combined. Keep in mind, it may get a little messy on this step, so if you had kids, they’ll probably really enjoy being included on this part.

Step 3:

After you have broken down the coco and combined it with the nutrients packet, you’ll then smooth the surface some so that it is nice and even. Do not compact it!!

Step 4:

Choose one of the two seed variety packets, then sprinkle (1) seed packet on top of the coco. Doing your best to spread the seed evenly. Once the grow medium has been seeded, lightly tamp (push) the seeds into the coco, but do not compact them down! If you bought our “Reusable Microgreen Grow Kit” that includes the reusable lid with our leaf logo, you can actually use it to lightly tamp with… otherwise, using your fingers will work just fine too!

Step 5:

Lastly, fill the spray bottle up with some tap water! Then give your freshly seeded grow medium a few spritz until it is nice and moist (but not saturated) – Then place the lid onto the container. You have now sown your Microgreen seedlings and they will start to germinate!!

From this point forward, you will water your seedlings twice a day using the spray bottle and set them on your counter or a shelf. We suggest keeping them somewhere that doesn’t get to cold, this way they grow quicker - since colder temperatures will drastically slow the germination and growth. After each watering, make sure you place the lid back on top!

Within 3 to 5 days of misting the seeds, the microgreens will start growing and you will begin to see more of the yellow microgreen showing, rather than the darker seedlings. When they stand up, remove the lid, and place them into an area that is well lit!!

If you are unsure if it’s time to remove the lids from your kit, take a look at the photo above – for the reusable kit, the lid will be pushed up some from the microgreens and you’ll see more yellow. For the paper kit, the microgreens will be standing up more and you’ll see more yellow! This means it’s time to loose the lids and introduce to the light! Natural light will work perfectly, as long as it’s decently abundant light! Dim natural light may cause them to get “lanky”. If possible, we like to give ours a boost by using artificial light, though it’s not required.

After you introduce your microgreens to the light for the first time, you will continue to water them twice a day, every day until harvest day. Keep in mind that will start to need more water as they grow bigger, so you might need to spray them more then before. Just make sure not to over-water either!

If you followed these steps, around day 7 - 13 your Microgreens should be ready for harvest, and you can easily use a pair of scissors to harvest them!! Once harvested, we highly suggest adding them into your morning smoothies, onto a lettuce wrap with tuna salad or even eating them by themselves!! To be honest… there are so many ways to use microgreens – so get creative!
